Vignettes and emissions stickers in Europe, country by country

Which countries require a vignette? That depends on your route. Driving through Europe there are broadly two kinds of requirement: a motorway vignette, which pays for your use of the motorway (as in Austria and Switzerland), and an emissions sticker, which gets you into the low-emission zones in cities (such as the French Crit'Air and the German Umweltplakette). On many routes through Europe you need both.

Emissions stickers for low-emission zones

  • France

Crit'Air sticker required in the low-emission zones (ZFE) of Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and Marseille among others, including for UK-registered cars. One sticker, valid across France and for the whole life of your car.

    Order the French emissions sticker
  • Germany

Umweltplakette (the green emissions sticker) required in more than 40 Umweltzonen, including Cologne, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart. One sticker, valid in every German zone.

    Order the German emissions sticker

Vignettes for the motorway

  • Austria

Digital vignette required on every Austrian motorway (Autobahn and Schnellstraße). Available as a 1-day, 10-day, 2-month or annual vignette, linked to your number plate. The Brenner and a few tunnels carry a separate toll.

    Order the Austrian vignette
  • Switzerland

Annual vignette (CHF 40) required on Swiss motorways, as a sticker or digitally. We do not sell it yet; you buy it at the border or online from Swiss customs.

  • Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary

Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary use digital e-vignettes for the motorway. You buy those online from the national road operator. The route planner flags it as soon as your route runs through one of these countries.

Registration instead of a sticker

  • Belgium

No sticker, but low-emission zones (LEZ) in Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. Register your UK number plate with the city in advance, or you will be fined. From 1 May 2027 a digital toll vignette is added on top.

    Everything about the Belgium vignette
  • Spain

Low-emission zones (ZBE) in Madrid, Barcelona and a growing number of cities. Spain issues no environmental sticker of its own to foreign cars, but the French Crit'Air vignette is accepted there. So order one before you leave.

  • Italy

No national sticker, but restricted city centres (ZTL) and Area B in Milan. Drive into a ZTL without permission and the fine is issued automatically by camera.

London Marseille

London Innsbruck

Ski trip to Austria via Germany

You need no sticker on the German Autobahn, but the moment you drive into a city to refuel or stay the night you do: the Umweltplakette. In Austria the digital vignette is required from the first kilometre of motorway.

London Verona

Italy via Austria and the Brenner

An Umweltplakette for German cities, an Austrian vignette plus a separate Brenner toll, and tolls per stretch in Italy. Watch out for the ZTL zones in Italian cities. Go via Switzerland instead and you need the Swiss annual vignette.

London Split

Croatia via Germany, Austria and Slovenia

Four countries, four sets of rules: an Umweltplakette for German cities, the Austrian vignette, a Slovenian e-vignette and tolls per stretch in Croatia. The route planner lines all four up for you.

London Barcelona

Spain via France

On the way you pass French low-emission zones, so a Crit'Air sticker is the sensible thing to carry. In Barcelona and Madrid you have to register your UK number plate in advance for the low-emission zone (ZBE).

London Paris

Paris and Disneyland Paris

Paris and the surrounding communes inside the A86 ring form one large low-emission zone: Crit'Air required. Disneyland Paris lies outside it, but the moment you drive from the park into the city you need the sticker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which sticker I need?

Enter your route. We work out which countries and low-emission zones you pass through and show, per zone, which sticker or vignette applies to your vehicle.

Which countries require a vignette?

A motorway vignette is required in Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary, among others. On top of that you need an emissions sticker for the low-emission zones in France (Crit'Air) and Germany (Umweltplakette). Belgium, Spain and Italy work with registration or access rules per city. France, Germany and Austria you arrange straight through the route planner; for the other countries you see what you have to do yourself.

What is the difference between a vignette and an emissions sticker?

A vignette is a toll: you pay for the use of the motorways, as with the digital vignette in Austria. An emissions sticker says something about your car's emissions and gets you into the low-emission zones in cities, such as the French Crit'Air and the German Umweltplakette. Germany and France have no motorway vignette for cars, and Austria has no emissions sticker.

Does the planner know for sure that I drive through a low-emission zone?

No. We calculate your route and check which low-emission zones lie near it. Whether you actually drive through one we cannot see: a motorway sometimes runs just past a zone instead of through it. So treat a reported zone as a prompt to check, or get the sticker to be safe - entering a zone without a valid sticker means a fine.

How soon will I have my vignette or sticker?

That depends on the product. France: you receive temporary proof by email within 48 hours; the physical Crit'Air sticker comes from the French authority and takes 14 to 31 days. Germany: orders placed before 8 PM go out the same day; the Umweltplakette arrives in 2 to 3 working days in the Netherlands and Germany, and 4 to 6 working days elsewhere. Austria: a digital vignette, so no shipping at all - usually sorted within 24 hours.

Does one emissions sticker cover several cities?

A French Crit'Air sticker is valid in every French low-emission zone, and the German Umweltplakette in every German Umweltzone. For other countries you see it per zone in your overview.

Driving to France or through Europe: what do I need?

Start with your route: that tells you which vignettes and emissions stickers are compulsory. Order the Crit'Air sticker and the Umweltplakette well in advance, because they come by post; the Austrian vignette is digital and sorted within a day. If you drive through Belgium or Spain, register your number plate with the city. Also check the compulsory equipment per country, such as a warning triangle and a high-visibility vest, and consider a toll badge for France, Spain and Italy.

Does the route planner work for a camper or a motorcycle?

Yes. Choose car/camper or motorcycle for your vehicle. In Austria the vignette price differs per category, and campers over 3,500 kg fall under the GO-Box instead of the vignette. The Crit'Air sticker applies to campers and motorcycles too; the German Umweltplakette does not apply to motorcycles, which may enter the Umweltzonen without a sticker.

Is the route planner free?

Yes. Calculating your route, viewing the low-emission zones on the map and the overview of required vignettes and stickers are all free and need no account. You only pay if you decide to order something.

Can I order without entering a route?

Yes. If you already know which country you need, order it directly per country using the buttons below the form.
