About This Emission Zone

What You Need to Know Before You Leave

Welcome to our information page about the environmental sticker and the Umweltzone in Darmstadt. Here you will find everything you need to know about the implementation of the Umweltzone in Darmstadt, the mandatory diesel ban, exceptions, parking options outside the zone, and other useful information for your visit.

Implementation of the Low Emissions Zone in Darmstadt

On 1 November 2015, the Umweltzone in Darmstadt was established, within which an environmental sticker is required to improve air quality. On 1 June 2019, the policy was further tightened with a diesel ban in certain streets in the city centre. For those looking for general information about the environmental sticker or wanting to know which cities in Germany have a similar zone, we provide an overview on the main page.

Map of the Umweltzone in Darmstadt

The Umweltzone in Darmstadt extends across the entire city and its immediate surroundings, including business districts, residential areas, and the suburbs of Arheiligen and Eberstadt. This makes the zone in Darmstadt more extensive than many other German cities, where usually only the city centre falls under the Umweltzone. Make sure you are familiar with this zone to avoid risking fines.

Exceptions

As in most German cities, the motorways (Autobahnen) are also an exception in Darmstadt. You can drive freely here without an environmental sticker. The motorways that fall outside the Umweltzone are the A5, A67, and A672, which run along the western edge of Darmstadt. Additionally, the B3, which transitions into the A661 north of the city, is freely accessible. These routes are marked on the map with a blue line and provide access to several popular destinations, such as the zoo.

Parking Outside the Umweltzone in Darmstadt

Due to the size of the environmental zone in Darmstadt, it can be challenging to park outside the zone and then travel to the city centre via public transport. One option is to exit the A67 at Griesheim and park at the nearby shopping centre (A on the map). From here, you can take tram lines 4 and 9 to the city centre of Darmstadt, a journey of about 15 minutes. However, keep in mind that public transport costs are often higher than the cost of an environmental sticker.

Which Environmental Sticker is Required in Darmstadt?

In Darmstadt, the green environmental sticker is mandatory, as in most German cities with an Umweltzone. Travelers who already have a valid environmental sticker for Germany do not need to purchase an additional sticker; these stickers are valid throughout the country.

Purchasing an Environmental Sticker for Darmstadt

Don't have an environmental sticker yet? You can easily order one online. Payment can be made via iDEAL, credit card, or a Belgian bank, and the sticker will be dispatched within one working day.

Alternatives for Online Ordering:

If you are already on your way and don't have time to wait for the post, you can also purchase an environmental sticker at German car garages or inspection centres such as DEKRA and TÜV. Please note: weekend opening hours are often limited, and some garages may even be closed.

Diesel Ban in Darmstadt

In addition to the standard environmental zone, Darmstadt has implemented a diesel ban for two busy streets in the city centre. On Hügelstraße (between Karlstraße and Wilhelminenplatz) and Heinrichstraße (between Karlstraße and Heidelberger Straße), it is prohibited for older diesel vehicles to drive, even if they have a green environmental sticker.

This ban applies to:
- Diesel vehicles that do not meet the Euro 5 standard (usually those from before September 2009).
- Petrol vehicles that do not meet the Euro 2 standard (usually those from before January 1997).

The police conduct random checks, with a particular focus on older vehicles.

Darmstadt is surrounded by other cities with environmental zones. Directly to the north are Frankfurt and Offenbach, which together form a contiguous Umweltzone. A bit further northwest are the zones of Wiesbaden and Mainz, separated by the Rhine. If you travel south, you will encounter the environmental zone of Mannheim.
