What You Need to Know Before You Leave
Does Strasbourg have a Low Emsissions Zone? The answer is yes. Are you planning a city break to the capital of Alsace, known as La Petite France or Strasbourg? Be prepared, as an environmental zone has been in effect in and around Strasbourg since January 1, 2022, affecting all types of motor vehicles.
The permanent environmental zone (ZFE) came into effect on January 1, 2022. Initially, the restrictions apply only to the most polluting vehicles, specifically those without a classification and Crit'Air Vignette France category 5 vehicles. Until January 1, 2023, this is an educational phase (during which fines are not yet issued). The definitive driving and parking ban for unclassified and category 5 Vignette France vehicles will commence on January 1, 2023. These rules will gradually expand to include vehicles in other categories, with the following tentative schedule:
- From January 2023, a ban for Vignette France category 5 and vehicles without a sticker,
- From January 2024, a ban for Vignette France categories 4, 5 and vehicles without a sticker,
- From January 2025, a ban for Vignette France categories 3, 4, 5 and vehicles without a sticker,
- From January 2028, a ban for Vignette France categories 2, 3, 4, 5 and vehicles without a sticker.*
*The category 2 ban from 2028 applies only within the municipalities of Strasbourg, Schiltigheim, Ostwald, and Holtzheim, and does not extend to other municipalities.
Before the new measures are implemented, there will always be an educational phase. For the first measure, this is the year 2022. This phase focuses on communication and monitoring, but fines will not be issued until one year after the start date.
