What You Need to Know Before You Leave
Does Nice (Côte d'Azur) have a low emissions zone? The answer is yes. Are you driving your vehicle towards or through Nice on the Côte d'Azur? Then pay attention to the environmental zones in and around Nice. Environmental restrictions have been in place since January 1, 2022, due to the introduction of these zones. An emissions sticker for France is mandatory in the permanent environmental zone (ZFE) of Nice.
Permanent Environmental Zone Nice (ZFE)
The permanent environmental zone in the Nice metropolitan area (Côte d'Azur) covers the city centre, including many popular tourist spots such as:
- The Promenade des Anglais (which stretches from Avenue des Grenouillères to Avenue Max Gallo)
- The American Quay (Quai des Etats-Unis stretches from Avenue Max Gallo to Quai Rauba Capeu)
- The Quay of Rauba Capeu (which extends from the American Quay to Rue de Foresta).
Voie Mathis, Boulevard Carabacel, Avenue Désambrois, and Boulevard Grosso are not part of the environmental zone. You can drive there without an emissions sticker for France.
Gradual Implementation of the Emissions Zone in Nice
The traffic restrictions in Nice (Côte d'Azur) will be implemented gradually. The environmental zone is in effect at all times. The following vehicles will be prohibited on these dates:
- January 1, 2022: ban on emissions sticker category 5 for heavy trucks, buses, and coaches.
- January 1, 2023: ban on emissions sticker category 5 and 4 for heavy trucks, buses, and coaches, as well as a ban on emissions sticker category 5 for private and light commercial vehicles (except for motorised two-wheelers and vehicles displaying a disabled parking permit).
- The timeline for when the ban on emissions sticker category 3 for heavy trucks, buses, and coaches will come into effect is still unclear (as of 2025). It is also unclear when the ban will apply to emissions sticker category 4 for private and light commercial vehicles (unless these vehicles are already exempt, such as those with a disabled parking permit and motorised two- and three-wheelers).
As of now (2025), the only restrictions in Nice are on emissions stickers category 5 and 4 for trucks, buses, and coaches. For private cars, there is only a ban on emissions sticker category 5.
