About This Emission Zone

What You Need to Know Before You Leave

Welcome to our comprehensive information page about the emissions sticker and emissions zone in Frankfurt. Here you will find everything you need to know about the implementation of the environmental zone in Frankfurt, which emissions sticker is required, exceptions to the rules, convenient parking options outside the zone, and other useful details for your visit.

Implementation of the Emissions Zone Frankfurt

The emissions zone in Frankfurt was established to improve air quality in the city and reduce harmful emissions. Since January 1, 2012, only vehicles with a green German emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) are allowed to enter the city. This measure is part of a broader commitment to environmentally friendly mobility and air quality in Germany.

Emissions Zone Frankfurt on the Map

The emissions zone in Frankfurt is bounded by the motorways A5, A661, and A3. These motorways themselves are not within the emissions zone, but once you leave the motorway and enter the city, a green emissions sticker is mandatory. The adjacent city of Offenbach has also had its own emissions zone since 2015, which is bounded by the A3 and the River Main.

Exceptions to the Emissions Zone Frankfurt

In Germany, motorways are exempt from emissions sticker requirements unless you exit into an emissions zone. However, this exception does not apply to the A66 in Frankfurt, as this motorway is entirely within the emissions zone. Another exception is the A648, A3, A5, and A661 leading to Messe Frankfurt, which can be accessed without an emissions sticker. Frankfurt Airport is also accessible without an emissions sticker.

Parking Outside Frankfurt

If your vehicle is not eligible for an emissions sticker, you can park outside the emissions zone. A popular option is the P+R Parking Eschborn Süd (free parking), located along the A66 and right next to the Eschborn Süd metro station. Other options include the Hessen-Center, P+R-Haus Borsigallee (paid parking) with good metro connections, or the parking lots at Frankfurt Airport, which provide quick access to the city. For those who can obtain a green sticker, it is often more economical to purchase it rather than incur additional costs for public transport. After all, the sticker is valid for the entire lifespan of the vehicle.

Which Emissions Sticker is Required in Frankfurt?

Since 2012, the green emissions sticker is the only one that grants access to the emissions zone in Frankfurt. Cars with older stickers, such as yellow or red, no longer have access. If your vehicle is not suitable for a green sticker, you will need to park outside the zone. Check the information page for details on which vehicles qualify for a green sticker.
