Introduction to the Low Emissions Zone Düsseldorf
Planning to drive into Düsseldorf's city centre? It's important to know that since 15 February 2009, you need a German emissions sticker. This sticker is mandatory for access to the environmental zone, the area focused on air quality where only vehicles displaying the correct sticker are allowed. In this article, we’ll cover everything about the environmental zone in Düsseldorf, the exceptions, parking options outside the zone, and how to easily obtain an emissions sticker.
Umwelt Zone Map Düsseldorf
The map below shows the Environmental Zone Düsseldorf marked in orange. Within this zone, an emissions sticker is required for all motor vehicles except motorcycles. Clear road signs are placed as you approach the zone, allowing you to check if you have the correct sticker in time. This helps prevent accidentally entering the zone without the necessary permission.

Exceptions to the Environmental Zone Düsseldorf
There are some exceptions to the environmental zone in Düsseldorf. Most motorways surrounding the city, including the A44 to the north and the A46 to the southeast, are outside this zone. The A57 can also be accessed without a German emissions sticker. However, a significant exception is the A52, which leads directly into the centre of Düsseldorf. If you're entering the city via the A52 from the north or west, you will inevitably drive into the Düsseldorf environmental zone, and thus, you will need a sticker.
The Düsseldorf Airport, the exhibition centre, and the Esprit Arena of Fortuna Düsseldorf are outside the environmental zone. The last two locations can be accessed via the A44, and the connecting roads from the A44 to these locations are also exempt from the sticker requirement.
Parking Outside Düsseldorf
If you don’t have an emissions sticker or your vehicle doesn’t meet the requirements, consider parking outside the environmental zone and taking public transport from there. For instance, you can park at the airport, exhibition centre, or stadium (Messe area), where you can easily transfer to the S-Bahn or U-Bahn towards Düsseldorf city centre. Additionally, there are several other Park+Ride facilities around Düsseldorf. Just be aware that some of these facilities are within the environmental zone and thus require a sticker. Parking outside the zone is especially worthwhile if your vehicle is not eligible for the emissions sticker; in other cases, it may be cheaper to purchase the sticker.
Which Emissions Sticker in Düsseldorf?
In Düsseldorf, the green emissions sticker is mandatory. Since 1 July 2014, only vehicles with a green sticker are allowed in the environmental zone. If your vehicle is only eligible for a yellow or red sticker, unfortunately, you cannot enter the zone since 2014. Please note that violations of the environmental zone rules can result in a fine of €100 (excluding administrative costs).
How to Obtain an Emissions Sticker in Düsseldorf
There are two ways to obtain an emissions sticker: online or in-person at certain inspection stations in Germany. Below, you can read more about both options.
Buy an Emissions Sticker Online (Recommended)
The easiest way to purchase an emissions sticker is online. If you live in the UK or Belgium, you can order the sticker through our English/Flemish website and pay via iDEAL, PayPal, Credit Card, or Bancontact. The sticker will be sent by post within one working day. With this option, you don’t have to leave your home, and you’ll receive your sticker quickly.
In-Person Near Düsseldorf
If you need the sticker urgently, you can also visit a car garage or a branch of DEKRA, TÜV, or GTÜ. Prices are usually around €10, depending on the location. Just make sure to purchase your emissions sticker before reaching the Düsseldorf environmental zone and not at a location within the zone. Don’t forget to bring your vehicle registration document.

Keep this in mind if you plan to visit these cities as well.
