What You Need to Know Before You Leave
Does Montpellier have an emissions zone? Yes! Planning a trip to the beautiful Montpellier by car or campervan, or heading for a lovely weekend by the coast near Montpellier? Be aware that there are environmental restrictions in and around Montpellier due to the established emissions zones. An emissions sticker for France has been mandatory since July 2022.
Permanent Emissions Zone Montpellier (ZFE)
Initially, from 1 July 2022, the emissions zone covers a relatively small area. The zone applies to cities such as Castelnau-le-Lez, Clapiers, Grabels, Jacou, Juvignac, Lattes, Le Crès, Montpellier, Pérols, Saint-Jean-de-Védas, and Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone. From 1 July 2026, 31 municipalities within the Montpellier-Méditerranée Métropole will participate in the permanent emissions zone (ZFE).
The emissions zone applies to cars, motorised two- and three-wheelers, lorries, buses, and light commercial vehicles, and is active 24/7. An emissions sticker for France is required within the zone.
Traffic restrictions in Montpellier will be implemented gradually. The following vehicles will be banned on these dates:
- 1 July 2022: ban on emissions stickers for France category 5 (for light commercial vehicles, buses, and lorries) and ban on vehicles without emissions stickers for France (for private cars);
- 1 January 2023: ban on emissions stickers for France category 5 and 4 (for light commercial vehicles, buses, and lorries) and ban on emissions stickers for France category 5 for private cars);
- 1 January 2024: ban on emissions stickers for France category 5, 4, and 3 (light commercial vehicles, buses, and lorries) and ban on emissions stickers for France category 5 and 4 for private cars);
- 1 January 2025: ban on emissions stickers for France category 5, 4, 3, and 2 (light commercial vehicles, buses, and lorries) and ban on emissions stickers for France category 5, 4, and 3 for private cars);
- 1 January 2028: ban on emissions stickers for France category 5, 4, 3, and 2 for all vehicles;
Vehicles without a French emissions sticker will be prohibited from entering the area at all times. An emissions vignette for France is therefore mandatory from 1 July 2022. Be prepared for your journey and order yours in advance.
