What You Need to Know Before You Leave

Does Marseille have an emissions zone? Yes! Are you driving to Marseille or taking a camper van for a lovely weekend by the coast near Marseille? Be aware that there are environmental restrictions in and around Marseille due to the established emissions zones. An emissions sticker for France has been mandatory since September 2022.

The permanent emissions zone (ZFE) of the Métropole d’Aix-Marseille-Provence covers an area of 19.5 km² and includes approximately 314,000 residents (excluding tourists). The area is bounded by l’avenue du Cap Pinède, the boulevards Capitaine Géze and de Plombières, l’avenue Alexandre Fleming, the boulevards Françoise Duparc, Sakakini, Jean Moulin and Rabatau, and l’avenue du Prado 2. Permanent emissions zone (ZFE) Marseille

 

The permanent low emissions zone in Marseille (ZFE) that comes into effect on 1 September 2022 applies to both commercial vehicles and passenger cars. No vehicle is exempt. Currently, the project is in an educational phase. Enforcement is in place, but no penalties are being issued yet. From 1 September 2022, fines will be imposed for entering the emissions zone without the required emissions stickers for France.

The permanent emissions zone in Marseille will be gradually implemented over a period of 3 years. Over the next 3 years, the following vehicles without an emissions sticker for France will be restricted:

  • From September 2022, French emissions sticker category 5 and vehicles without a vignette for France.
  • From September 2023, emissions sticker category 4 and 5 and vehicles without a vignette for France.
  • It is still unclear when vehicles with emissions sticker category 3 will be restricted, expected by 2025.
