Is the French emissions sticker valid in Geneva (Switzerland)?

Are you driving to the South of France and/or visiting Switzerland? You might be wondering if you need multiple emissions stickers. Good news: in some cases, one sticker will do the trick.

The French emissions sticker can be used in three countries

The French emissions sticker, also known as the Crit’Air vignette, is valid in the low-emission zone of Geneva, Switzerland. This means you can use this sticker in both French cities and Geneva to access areas where restrictions apply to polluting vehicles. The French Crit’Air sticker is also valid within Spanish low-emission zones (except for the zone in Barcelona).

This is handy, as it means you don’t need to purchase a separate sticker for each country; you can simply use the French sticker.

What about other emissions stickers?

Not all emissions stickers are interchangeable. Here are some important points to consider:

  • Emissions stickers from countries other than France and Switzerland are not valid in Switzerland;
  • The Swiss emissions sticker (the so-called Macaron Stick’air sticker) cannot be used in France;
  • France primarily accepts only the official Crit’Air vignette within its low-emission zones, but in the French low-emission zone Annemasse-Agglo, the Swiss Macaron Stick’air is also recognised.
  • The Spanish emissions sticker is not available for foreign vehicles. You can enter Spanish low-emission zones with the correct French, Swiss, or German emissions sticker.

Smart choice: opt for the French sticker

Since the French emissions sticker can be used in both France and Geneva, it is often the most practical choice, especially if you’re planning a trip that includes both countries.

With just one sticker:

All in all, the French sticker is ideal for a visit to southern France. It can still be ordered now. The question remains how long the French coalition parties will want to abolish low-emission zones in France altogether. More information about the status of the abolition can be found in the article linked.

When do you need an emissions sticker?

In both French cities and Geneva, low-emission zones may be active depending on air quality, either temporarily or permanently. Without the correct sticker, you risk a fine or even a driving ban. Therefore, always check in advance:

  • if there is a low-emission zone active at your destination. You can also keep an eye on our socials, where we post updates if the zone in Geneva is active.
  • what rules apply to your vehicle;

£460 fine for entering Geneva without a sticker

For several years now, Switzerland, particularly Geneva and surrounding areas, has implemented a low-emission zone system. This system is activated primarily when air quality deteriorates.

At such times, there are temporary access restrictions for vehicles, depending on their emission class. This typically occurs:

  • Between 06:00 and 22:00
  • Only in areas where this is indicated by signs
  • Through temporary traffic signs that become visible when the measure is active
  • On these signs, you can see exactly which emissions sticker grants access to the area at that time.
  • The Swiss operate a system that closely resembles that of France, including similar classifications and colour codes. Hence, the French Crit’Air sticker is valid in Geneva and its surroundings.
  • The signs and system can be found on the page about the Stick Air.

If you don’t have the French sticker, you will need the Swiss version (the “Stick’Air”), which is available online and at many petrol stations.

But be careful: Switzerland is known for strict enforcement. If you enter a low-emission zone without a valid sticker when it is active, you risk a fine of 500 Swiss francs, which amounts to about £460.

Don’t take a chance in Geneva

Are you travelling to France and/or Geneva? Then the French Crit’Air emissions sticker is a smart and practical choice. It gives you access to low-emission zones in both areas and prevents unnecessary complications along the way.

If you want to ensure you are well-prepared for your journey, it’s wise to apply for your sticker in advance. This way, you can enjoy your trip to the surrounding Côte d'Azur without worries. 🚗
